Camp Sunshine is a summer day camp for individuals with physical, intellectual or developmental disabilities.  In its 42nd year of operation, Camp Sunshine is held at the DENNY TERRACE CENTER, 6429 Bishop Avenue, Columbia, SC 29203.  Camp is scheduled Monday through Friday, drop off is between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m., pick up is between 2:45 and 3:00 p.m.  ALL Campers MUST be picked up by 3:00 p.m. unless attending extended care.

We are offering extended care for those who may need this service from 3:00-6:00 p.m.  Campers not picked up by 3:00 p.m. will be taken to extended care and charged $10.00 for that day.  Campers in extended care who are not picked up by 6:00 p.m. will be charged a late fee of $1.00 per minute.  If your child is in need of extended services, please be sure to indicate it on the application.  Camper cannot return to extended care if previous week is not paid in full.  A healthy snack will be provided in extended care for those who are not on special diets.  Extended care services are $10.00 per day.

Any person with physical, intellectual or developmental disabilities, ages 5 through 21, as long as we can accommodate their needs, is eligible to apply.  For potential new campers:  After receiving application and current IEP (Individual Education Plan), we will meet with parent/guardian and child to ask/answer questions, review application, tour the facility and determine if we can accommodate his/her needs.  Once accepted to camp, payment can be made.  Returning campers:  Please register and make payment on-line (call number below if assistance is needed), but a hard copy of application will also need to be completed and submitted.  If a returning camper’s needs changes, then after attempts have been made to rectify the situation, and Supervisor has met with parent/guardian, and we are still unable to accommodate camper’s needs, the camper may be removed from Camp Sunshine.  A waiting list will start once we reach our maximum number of campers.

It is very important that campers attend every day.  We are contracted to serve a certain number of students per day in our program.  If camper will be absent, parent/guardian is asked to please call to let us know in advance or as soon as possible.

Many activities are planned in music/dance, drama/storytelling, sports/games, arts/crafts, swimming and field trips.  If your child participates in swimming, please send appropriate swimwear (swimsuit, swim trunks, “Swimmies”, if needed) and a towel in a bag labeled with their name on their assigned swimming day.  Each activity provides an opportunity to enhance positive social interaction and self-expression that will promote growth and experience for each camper.

A healthy, USDA CACFP (Child and Adult Care Food Program) approved lunch and snack are provided daily, except for those who are on special diets (they will be expected to bring their own lunch and snack).

The camp staff is composed of professional adults with a wealth of experience.  Each activity is planned by our trained staff to provide campers with a maximum amount of fun.

Transportation will be available on a first come first serve basis within limits at designated pick-up/drop-off points.  We do not provide door-to-door service.  PLEASE CIRCLE “YES” ON APPLICATION IF TRANSPORTATION IS NEEDED.  SPACE IS LIMITED.  If you circled “yes” you will be contacted by transportation staff about pick up/drop off points and times before camp begins.  NOTEPick-up/drop off locations and times have changed.
