Therapeutic Recreation
Trenholm Park: 3900 Covenant Road, Columbia, SC 29204
The Therapeutic Recreation Department began 44 years ago with a summer camp program called Camp Sunshine. Originally a six-week camp, it provided children and young adults with physical, intellectual, and developmental challenges the opportunity to enjoy a traditional summer camp experience. Over the years, the camp expanded both in duration and age range, now serving ages 5–21 over seven weeks (six weeks in 2021 due to COVID-19).
Beyond summer camp, the department offers a variety of day and evening programs for people of all ages. We work closely with families of children with special needs and provide programs designed to promote socialization, teamwork, and personal development. These include the Carolina Panthers Challenger Flag Football League, Rising High Basketball, Wheelchair Basketball, and Spring and Fall Dances.
We also offer programs and activities for veterans, such as our Veterans’ Day Brunch and other community events.
We look forward to another year of service, continuing to enrich lives and connect communities—the best is yet to come!
