The Adaptive Recreation Department began more than 30 years ago with a summer camp program called Camp Sunshine. The 3-three week camp gave children and adults, ages 8-25, with physical and intellectual challenges an opportunity to enjoy their summer camp experience. Now in it’s 34th year, Camp Sunshine continues to offer campers the same day-camp experience.
Beyond just summer camp, the Adaptive Recreation Department offers many day and evening programs to a wide-range of people. We work closely with families with children with special needs and offer several athletic programs including the Carolina Panthers Challenger Flag Football League, Fancy Feet Soccer and Rising High Basketball.
We also offer programs and activities to our veterans, both old and young. The Veterans Victory Room is open during the day and hosts local veterans groups for activities and fellowship time.
The Adaptive Recreation Department recently added another important outreach to those with physical challenges. A “Solo Rider” adaptive golf cart was purchased for the LinRick Golf Course. This adaptive golf cart enables an adult with any type of physical issue or challenge to navigate our 18-hole golf course.
