Adaptive Recreation

Administrative Office: 7473 Parklane Road, Columbia, SC 29223
Denny Terrace Gymnasium: 6429-A Bishop Avenue, Columbia, SC 29203

The Adaptive Recreation Department began 44 years ago with a summer camp program called Camp Sunshine.  This six week camp gave children and young adults with physical, intellectual and developmental challenges an opportunity to enjoy a summer camp experience.  Later, the ages changed from 8-25 to 5-21, and camp expanded from six weeks to eight weeks (six weeks in 2021 due to COVID-19).

Beyond just summer camp, the Adaptive Recreation Department offers day and evening programs to a wide-range of people.  We work closely with families with children with special needs and offer several programs to promote socialization, teamwork and personal development including the Carolina Panthers Challenger Flag Football League, Family and Friends Sports-A-Rama (participants enjoy a different sport each week), Rising High Basketball, Wheelchair Basketball and spring and fall dances.  We also offer programs and activities for our veterans such as Family Fun Day.

A video series called, “Get Off the Couch and Into the Groove” was created.  This interactive series allowed participants to get moving, to get creative, and to get engaged from the comfort of their own home – online!  Activities include arts and crafts, low impact fitness and sports.  Join us at:  https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9gJtphI36Uwosnet_6cJaBPA_rtNnivX  or  https://www.facebook.com/watch/richlandcountyrec/448878649724940/.  This family activity is great for those of all abilities. We are looking forward to another year of service as we enrich lives and connect communities.  The best is yet to come.
